  • As many know, dyslexia is a learning disability in reading. People with dyslexia have trouble reading, writing and spelling. It affects how we perform in school but is not a difficulty with intelligence. Struggles in school have, in my case, created the resilience that I can do anything I want in life, as long as I persevere I will succeed. Today this gives me an upper hand when faced with unsatisfactory results to get back up on that horse and do it even better the second time around. There are always great learnings when failing. Also struggling with one way of communicating has forced me to excel in other ways, like speaking and listening.

These things mentioned before are a result of having dyslexia in our society. But I also think differently than others. Studies have shown that people with dyslexia are creative and the majority of people with dyslexia are very artistic and have above average imaginative skills. Often see a situation holistically, enabling them to focus on the important elements without getting lost in the detail. This helps me to see the bigger picture.

We have fantastic spatial awareness. For me, this means that I have the ability to manipulate 3D shapes in my mind. Not only can I visualise in 3D, but I also recognise complex patterns in images and remember pitchers.

Another thing that is strongly connected with having dyslexia is problem-solving. Through our ability to think laterally and outside of the box. We come up with unique methods for problem-solving and offer lots of insight.

My superpowers:

  • resilience

  • communicating

  • creative

  • see the bigger picture

  • spatial awareness

  • recognize patterns

  • problem-solving

All these superpowers lead to natural curiosity to discover and understand new things – skills that are helpful throughout life and in almost every career.
